Why Create a Tobacco Free/Vape Free Work Environment?
November 21, 2019

A tobacco-free environment helps create a safe and healthy workplace. Many companies are making it possible to negotiate lower life, health, and disability coverage if employee smoking is reduced. This may motivate employees to quit or reduce cigarette/e-cigarette consumption.

As a business leader you have the freedom to take action and protect your employees by creating a healthier workplace environment.  In order to be effective, you must have the right tools for the job. Quitting tobacco is no different. Employers can increase their employee’s chances of quitting by offering a way to quit smoking, providing resources, and creating a support system in the workplace. Positive reinforcement, motivation, and encouragement to your employees will help when it comes to creating a healthier lifestyle including quitting cigarette/Electronic nicotine devices.

Recent studies suggest that employees who smoke cost businesses, on average, more than $6,000 per year when compared to non-smoking employees. For more information refer to the chart below which provides an outline on how tobacco users increase health care in the workplace (1).

The Tobacco Free Partnership participated at the Clay County Government/Retiree Health Fair on November 8, 2019 and was able to speak, educate, provide resources to current smokers, and to bring awareness to the dangers of tobacco/E-Cigarette devices. There were several employees who shared stories about how the cessation programs that are offered in Clay County have helped them become tobacco/e-cigarette free. Several County employees who currently smoke tobacco/e-cigarette devices showed an interest and even took the flyer that was provided at the table and stated that they cannot wait to sign up and receive the free services from Quit Your Way to help them quit!  The outcome of the event was very successful for the Tobacco Free Partnership and they are looking forward to the employee’s success stories for years to come.

Quitting smoking not only benefits your health; it also benefits your wallet. One year after quitting smoking, a former pack-a-day smoker can save about $2,100. That adds up to more than $10,500 in five years (2).
