Tobacco Free Partnership of Clay County Celebrates Annual Tobacco Free Florida Week
April 26, 2019

Tobacco Free Florida Week took place April 22-26th, 2019.  The year’s Tobacco Free Florida Week theme is E-Epidemic:  Vaping and Youth.

The goal of the Tobacco Free Partnership of Clay and Students Working Against Tobacco of Clay County, is to bring awareness to the E-Epidemic we are facing with the continued increase of youth vaping numbers in Clay County.  In partnership with the Bureau of Tobacco Free Florida, materials were provided to local community partners, school district personnel, and SWAT youth to engage them to learn more about the facts associated with vaping.  The materials provided include, rack cards, fact sheets, infographics, brochures, and print ads.  These materials were provided to several community partners and schools throughout Clay County to bring awareness to the truth behind vaping.

In Clay County the results of the Florida Youth Tobacco Survey show that vaping is steadily increasing among our youth.  Data from 2012 to 2018, showed an increase in several categories involving e-cigarettes.  For example, “Percentage of youth who have ever tried electronic vaping” increased from 7.5% in 2012 to 26.3% in 2018 and “Percentage of youth who currently use electronic vaping” increased from 2.7% in 2012 to 15.9% in 2018.  These staggering data points make it clear that education and prevention are key in helping our youth make educated decisions about tobacco use.

The Tobacco Free Partnership of Clay County, in partnership with Students Working Against Tobacco of Clay will continue to educate community members, school district staff and personnel, decision makers, and parents about the dangers of tobacco use and nicotine.
