An Early Goodbye!
By Joey O'Hern, March 29 , 2015

For those of you who may have missed the March Tobacco Free Partnership meeting I shared that after 3 years of working with the Clay County Tobacco Prevention Program, I've accepted a position with the Columbia County Tobacco Prevention Program.

The work we’ve able to accomplish during these past three years has been tremendously successful. Clay County became the first county in the state of Florida to pass ordinances regulating the sale of electronic cigarettes, setting the bar for other tobacco programs throughout the state. Our Students Working Against Tobacco Program has grown tremendously and consists of three high school clubs and one junior high club. These clubs are full of students from who are educated and engaged when it comes to tobacco prevention.

Lastly, through participation in numerous community events, such as the Clay County Agricultural Fair, Clay Chamber Teacher Appreciation Fair, Orange Park Kids Fest, and many more, close to 30,000 community members in Clay County have been educated on tobacco use. This is all because of the great support from many elected officials, community members, school administrators, etc. in Clay County!

Although I am leaving the great people of Clay County, whom I have come to know and love, I feel comfortable that my replacement, Jenna Hewett, will do a phenomenal job. Jenna is a close personal friend of mine and has over 15 years of experience in management, operation, and event production. Additionally, she has five years of experience in health education with an emphasis on chronic disease and tobacco prevention. Jenna works with several local coalitions and committees to improve the health and well-being of members of her local community. She has a strong background in working with youth and has a passion for mentoring and training youth in leadership skills. She is going to be a phenomenal addition to Clay County.

My position in Columbia County doesn't start until July 1, so for the next 3 months you can guarantee that the Tobacco Free Partnership of Clay County and I will continue to make Clay County a leader in tobacco prevention! Once again, I say THANK YOU to all of you for your support these past couple of years!
